“[Uuzilo] definitely made me stronger…it was the hardest thing, mentally, physically and emotionally, that I have ever been through — including military service.”

“I don’t know how to express my gratitude to [Uuzilo] for [its] selflessness and willingness to take a stranger...and share this wild adventure and meet people who changed my heart. [Uuzilo] has given me back my song, [singing] it gently to me when I forgot the words.”

Uuzilo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who have experienced a sudden, traumatic and unexpected life-altering event resulting in
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or profound grief.

Uuzilo assists individuals — and their families — with motorcycle and 4x4 expeditions in Africa. Expeditions provide a journey of personal and geographic discovery and vary in duration and direction depending on participant’s ability and availability. Participants maintain and operate appropriate vehicles, safety equipment, and camping supplies, creating a routine of daily activity and achievable goals, supportive of trauma recovery.

Through daily discovery and prolonged, intense, and focused activity — navigating Africa via 4x4 or bike — participants begin to regain a sense of confidence and control, often lost to those who have endured trauma. Uuzilo enables participants to feel renewed by living in the moment, healing, and rediscovering oneself while exploring some of the world’s natural wonders: the Namib Desert, Okavango Delta, and Victoria Falls.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) recognizes PTSD affects not only survivors of combat, but also terrorist attacks, natural disasters, serious accidents, assault, abuse, or even sudden and major emotional loss.

Uuzilo’s mission is to give those recovering from PTSD, profound grief, and trauma a reason to wake every morning eager to see another sunrise, to see what is over the horizon, “Uuzilo.”
