Our Journey Begins...
Located on the southwest coast of Africa, Namibia is uniquely suited to extended motorcycle journeys. One of the least densely populated countries on Earth, it boasts expansive stretches of exquisite, uninhabited terrain linked by a network of gravel roads that challenge a driver’s skills without being overly technical.
Despite the great distances, tourism infrastructure is exceptional, with Namibians welcoming guests into their lodges and rest camps located throughout the country. The Fish River Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of Africa”), the Namib Desert (thought to be the oldest desert on Earth), Sossusvlei (world’s tallest sand dunes), and Etosha National Park (home to four of Africa’s “Big Five”) are destinations explored.
Uuzilo expeditions take place over the Namibian winter (North American summer) when warm, dry days with brilliant, sunlit skies give way to cool, sometimes chilly evenings -- perfect weather for motorcycle travel. Expeditions are intended to be small (1-3 participants) and lengthy (several weeks to several months) creating intimacy and sufficient continuity to promote healing. Duration and direction of expeditions are tailored to participants’ availability, overall fitness, and motorcycle skills, as determined through Uuzilo’s application process.
Upon arrival participants are provided a suitable motorcycle, which they will operate and maintain for the duration of their trip. A few days are spent acclimating to their bikes and surroundings while receiving instruction and further evaluation of motorcycle ability.
An appropriate route is planned to reflect participants’ skills and allotted time. The small group and a guide embark on an expedition designed to challenge, inspire, and restore self-esteem reinforced by daily accomplishments. Through focused, physical activity (operating a motorcycle), setting goals, tasks, and priorities, and spending time with other people, an experiential recovery begins.
In addition to motorcycle and safety gear, participants are issued camping equipment and tasked with the daily responsibility of establishing a base to rest beneath infinite southern stars. Occasionally participants are pampered with a comfortable bed and dine beneath the thatched roof of a lodge.
In camp, lion, leopard, and hyena tracks may be found in the morning. Ostrich, oryx, and elephant are encountered — and navigated — along Namibia’s isolated roads.
Fellowship is built through adventure -- the trials and tribulations of the “road.” Uuzilo expeditions restore self-sufficiency and confidence. Participants support each other while developing independence, sometimes leading the small group on its daily course.
In addition to Namibia our journeys venture into neighboring Botswana, traversing the semi-arid Kalahari Desert and Caprivi Strip, finally reaching more fertile climes: the Okavango Delta, and Chobe National Park. Expeditions may further foray to the Zambia and Zimbabwe frontier where the fabled Zambezi River thunders over the precipice of one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders, Victoria Falls.
Upon completion of an Uuzilo motorcycle expedition participants look back on a series of accomplishments and positive memories created through experiential recovery over a long journey requiring daily, diligent focus on navigation, safety, and support for themselves and travel companions. Uuzilo creates an enduring community -- physical and emotional -- carried forward in support of healing from grief and trauma.
Uuzilo does not propose to “cure,” rather create a unique opportunity for individuals recovering from grief and trauma to wake every morning eager to see another sunrise, to see what is over the horizon, “Uuzilo.”
